The purpose of FinNuclear is to promote the general operating conditions, cooperation, international competence and awareness of organisations operating in the nuclear energy sector in Finland in the field of manufacturing, construction and services related to the sector. Metecno Oy sees FinNuclear as a great ambassador of Finnish specialised machinery expertise in Finland and abroad
Since 2008, Metecno has been a special purpose machine manufacturer, providing companies with tailor-made production machinery and industrial automation solutions, regardless of their industry. With the experience of the robotised machining station for Posiva Oy’s encapsulation plant and the radiation resistant CNC milling machine for VTT, Metecno is willing and able to profile itself as a Finnish expert in various specialised machinery projects related to the nuclear energy industry, both in Finland and abroad.
Visibility for FinNuclear, Metecno and nuclear power
Metecno joined FinNuclear in 2021 with the largest machine order in the company’s history from Posiva, motivated by the goal of becoming known in the Finnish nuclear power sector as a Finnish alternative for machine supply. In addition, the opportunity to participate in a globally unique project provided the impetus to network more deeply in the sector.
As Metecno sees nuclear power as an important energy source for society as a whole, the promotion of nuclear issues is an essential aspect of Metecno’s membership of FinNuclear. Promoting FinNuclear and Finnish nuclear power alongside its own activities is not a burden for Metecno, but a pleasant task. “In the light of recent world events, it is clear that Finnish energy production must be able to meet society’s energy needs in a self-sufficient manner. Communicating the importance of nuclear power to the national economy is therefore important,” says Matti Metsähonkala, the company’s founder and CEO.
Networking in Finland and outside Finland
Metecno strongly believes in the potential of FinNuclear membership, even though it has not yet resulted in orders for new machines in the three years of membership. “Nuclear power projects are large-scale and time-consuming projects, as are their preparation processes. By being in the radar of the parties involved in the preparations from the beginning, we are guaranteed to be better recognised as a domestic service provider,” analyses Metsähonkala.
But Metecno’s ambitions do not stop at Finland’s borders: “FinNuclear, if any, can create the necessary links between Finland and, for example, continental European operators, something we are particularly interested in as a company. We are not afraid to take a unique project to new countries,” says Metsähonkala.

Finnish engineering skills for export
Some of the special machine solutions manufactured by Metecno are unmatched anywhere in the world. Metecno therefore hopes that with greater visibility abroad, the solutions it has produced in the past will also find their target group more easily. Technological solutions created by engineering skills have long played a significant role in Finland’s service exports, and Metecno sees FinNuclear as a good facilitator to take the message of Finnish specialised engineering abroad.
According to Metsähonkala, networking through FinNuclear will support the company’s current marketing communication: ‘We have already received some enquiries from abroad about our special purpose machines. However, it is understandable that with the resources of a small SME, our marketing efforts cannot reach all the companies that could already use our machines.”
According to Metecno, the machining station to be built at Posiva’s encapsulation plant is a high-level technology product that can also be used as such in nuclear fuel disposal solutions in other countries.
